A couple of months ago Noah, Owen and Connor signed up for the YMCA triathlon To add to the fun Bray also signed up so all the boys would be competing together. When summer started we started our training. Every day they went for a bike ride, run or swim and even got all serious like a triathlete and did some bike rides followed by a run. Unfortunately, Noah broke his ankle and couldn't participate it and he was really bummed! He was training hard and was really looking forward to being in the race. Owen and Connor had the biking and running down, but the swimming was gong to be the issue. The boys can swim, but are not the greatest swimmers. So a week before the race we worked on our swimming and went through how to handle the transitions. We even did a mock triathlon. During the mock triathlon Connor was NOT happy! He told me he didn't want to do this stupid race! They had never really done anything like this before so I wasn't sure how they were going to handle it or even have fun.
On Saturday we went over to where they were having the race to get their numbers and set up their transition stations. I started to get a little nervous about them remembering everything so when we got home we went through their transtion again, but apparently they were not nervous as they were more into wearing their swim caps then working on their transitions.
We were up and out the door by 5:45am. They finished setting up their transtions and got their body markings. After that the waiting began for the race to start. Finally it was time for Connor to get lined up and ready to go.
He was nervous and had his game face on. He got into that pool and rocked the swim! He popped out of that pool and took off for the transition area with such determination.
He looked like a rockstar on the bike and rocked the run! We were running back and forth so much and he finished so much quicker than we thought that I barely made it to the finish line. I had never seen this side of Connor before, he became super competitive and was so determined the whole time. After he was done he then proceeded to tell us how many people he passed in the pool, on the bike and on the run. Once he finished it was finally Owen's turn to start. Again we were surprised how well he did in the pool and handled the transition from the pool to his bike.
By the time he was out on the bike there were so many more kids out there which made it more difficult to keep up a good speed, but he handled it so well and did awesome. He looked strong as he got off his bike and left for the run.
He was pushing it hard on the run and looked really good! I think he will be a great long distance runner, which makes his mom happy!
It was a great morning and Connor, Bray and Owen had so much fun! I had so much fun watching them and getting all wrapped up in all the race day hype. I loved watching them participate in something I love to do and see them love it so much. They wanted to sign up for another one, but the triathlon season is coming to an end , but hopefully their excitement wont' die down by spring. Owen and Connor really surprised me with their determination and effort. Connor ended up coming in 4th in his age group missing the podium by 4 seconds and had the fastest bike in his age group. Owen had a much more competitive field, but held his own! Noah was really bummed, but hopefully he will bring it in the spring.
